So called Themal Imaging cameras have very poor image quality

There are a number of thermal imaging cameras being offered by various sellers on AliExpress claiming them to be 160×220 pixels such as the HT-18 model I ordered below. They are basically all the same model but with different part numbers.

HT-18 on AliExpress

Having used a FLIR TG165 with 60×80 pixels I decided to get one to try it out, and boy was I disappointed. The image resolution is very poor and cannot be anywhere close to the claimed 160×220. The image of a Raspberry Pi 3 below shows the captured image from the HT-18 and the TG165. The TG165 produces a smaller image due to the lower resolution FLIR sensor and the HT-18 outputs an image size of 240×320.

You can clearly see that the TG165 is able to pick out the fins on the heatsink and the GPIO pins, but the HT-18 is just a blur. I tried a number of different settings but was not impressed with anything.

I tried to get a refund but AliExpress stepped in and said that my evidence was not valid. I guess if you are not familiar with thermal camera images then I guess you don’t know what to look for.
